9.7 Types of democracies
Types of democracies can also be illustrated using the Perception Spheres quartet.
In the table below, the main Western democratic systems are listed in order from the most static to the most active head of state.
A monarch (such as a king or queen) is considered the most “static” because societal dynamism (elections) does not determine whether they remain head of state. (The exception is revolution, which is a violent form of societal dynamism.) Moreover, static heads of state typically do not take an active role in the day-to-day political process.
