8.5         Analogy with a quartet of basic mathematical operations

When my daughter pointed out that there are also only four basic mathematical operations, I realized how closely they parallel the four Business Orientations.

In mathematical addition, something new emerges when at least two components come together. Likewise, when an Expert and a client collaborate, a solution is born.

In mathematical subtraction, something new appears when something is taken away. Similarly, a new Product emerges when the old Product—or the previous situation without a product—is removed.

In mathematical multiplication, something new arises when copies of the original unit spread out. In the same way, the Self-Service approach expands by multiplying its principle, not by connecting identical units—multiplication is not simply addition in disguise.

Finally, in mathematical division, something new takes shape when the whole begins to exist in separate parts. Likewise, the (Commodity) Market is a unified whole, yet it can only exist through its participants.
